Here are a few inspirational videos of HEMA to show what it is possible for people to do with sword in hand!
Back in 2008, the Gladiatores group in Germany released one of the most iconic video demonstrations of HEMA techniques. Re-released with better quality graphics in 2012, this is still a fantastic video, showing some of the beauty and variety of actions when fencing with the longsword.
Anton Kohutovič and Martin Tibensky (from the Slovakian club Trnavský šermiarsky cech) have been pushing themselves for years, trying to make their interpretations and performances as energetic and effective as possible. This video from 2009 shows some of their earlier work … and they have only become faster and more skilful since then!
In 2010, they released a second video, showcasing another set of techniques, with the same dynamism and intent as before.
In 2011, Martin Fabian (from another Slovakian group, Bratislavský šermiarsky spolok) made a video showing a themed set of techniques, again in a very dynamic and high intensity fashion.
In 2014, Ingulf Kohweiss and his club (Indes, from Austria) put together a wonderfully artistic video showing some of the different elements of HEMA that are related to fencing with the longsword.
Finally, a more recent video from the TaurHEMAchia 2016 event in Turin: Liverpool HEMA instructor Keith Farrell shows some sparring with Federico Malagutti. We used minimal equipment, just a fencing mask and thin gloves; we began slowly, and gradually increased the speed and intensity over the duration of the bout.
