Private tuition is available if you would like some additional practice in a one-to-one setting with the instructor, or potentially a small group setting with one or two friends. This is an ideal way to get some additional practice if your schedule is flexible, or to get some training at all if your schedule makes attending the normal group lessons difficult.
Private tuition is one of the best ways to improve your skills quickly. We can work on whatever you would like to focus on, or you can ask the instructor to diagnose a problem and offer a solution for you. Because the focus is on you for the duration of the session, you will manage a lot of repetitions, and the lessons will be designed to help you improve at a pace that you find comfortable.
This can also be a good opportunity to work on a different discipline, if you are interested in something other than longsword and don’t have the opportunity to work on it regularly at the club. Common requests include sabre, sword and buckler, and dagger, for example.
Price of private tuition
You are welcome to arrange private tuition for yourself and a friend together, so that you can split the cost between you.
If you would like to arrange a private session for a larger group, there will be a small additional fee per additional person.
Typical Hourly Rate | |
---|---|
1 person | £50 per hour for non-members £40 per hour for club members |
2nd person | No additional fee for a 2nd person (you can split the £50 fee between you) |
More people | £10 per hour per additional person |
Hall hire | Included in the hourly price for a typical booking (additional fee may be required for booking at a different venue) |
The table above shows the typical hourly rate, including discounts for club members.
Hall hire is now included within the hourly fee for a typical booking, there is nothing extra to pay. We use the Lifestyles Ellergreen centre near Norris Green and Croxteth. If we need to arrange a different venue then there may need to be an additional fee to cover any additional costs.
Typically, the instructor is unable to travel to teach private tuition, due to the time that this takes. However, it is something that could be discussed, if the value of the booking would sufficient to make the travelling time worthwhile.
Venue, hall hire, and technology
Indoors: health and safety must be prioritised over price, and therefore hall hire for indoor training must be the default option, unless circumstances and weather allow for safe outdoor training. The standard indoor venue for private tuition is the Lifestyles Ellergreen centre near Norris Green and Croxteth. The instructor will make the necessary arrangements to book the hall.
Outdoors: if you are happy to train outdoors, then we can use the instructor’s garden on a good day with reasonable weather. This arrangement may be suitable for some lessons, but not for everything (there is not really enough space for sparring), and weather is always a factor.
Online: another option, if travel might be difficult, would be to arrange some private tuition online over Zoom. We can convene in front of the webcams to have a helpful discussion or to go through some exercises together, whether just physical training or exercises with sword in hand (within the limits of the indoor space available to us).
